Vw eco-friendly Scirocco Cup

It seems like an odd juxtaposition, but "going green" and motorsports have been increasingly paired together lately. In the United States, the American Le Mans Series initiated the Green X Challenge this past season with a focus on creating the least amount of negative impact on the environment. Winning teams even get trophies made from recycled Michelin tires.

For the past several years, Volkswagen has had its own version of green racing in Europe with the Polo Cup, but for 2010 they will be making the switch to a natural gas-powered Scirocco as the vehicle of choice for the one-make series. Each of the cars will feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine fueled by Bio-CNG, which is produced using renewable sources like grass, corn or biological waste. The Scirocco Cup has also signed on to become a partner with DTM series, and will also pit young talent against motorsports legends at each race.

Sema 09-2010 Steeda Q350 Mustang

Not all cars attract the attention of tuners; you rarely hear of modified Toyota Camrys or Chevrolet Malibus. By contrast, an abundance of tuning shops offer worked-over Ford Mustangs. Steeda is one of the more impressive, claiming to have raced its vehicles to more wins than other ‘Stang tuners like Shelby, Saleen, and Roush.

We were thus excited to hear that Steeda would modify a 2010 Ford Mustang for the 2009 SEMA show. Unfortunately, the company’s staying pretty tight-lipped on specifics for this pony car. We do know that Steeda has added a bodykit that aids cooling and aerodynamics, and it also has made undisclosed power and handling upgrades.

Camaro available in Australia

For years and years, avid American car enthusiasts thought of a certain Holden as the Holy Grail. In hushed tones and with furtive looks, we let each other know that, yeah, the BMW E39 M5 is pretty dang sweet, but there's this Australian car... a four-door with a six-speed and a Corvette motor... and it's... dare we say it... better? However, it remained a piece of Automotive apocrypha not only because we couldn't have it, but because no one could remember the name (HSV GTS, of all the nonsensical, alphabet soup letter combos Holden could have selected).

We mention the legendary HSV GTS because Australian Camaro fans might now be experiencing what us muscle car-starved Yanks went through at the beginning of the decade -- withdrawal! Because not only are there are no right-hand drive Camaros (Aussies still insist on pretending they're British/Japanese), but the 2010 update to the original Mustang competitor is based almost totally on native Holden underpinnings. Ouch!
But fear not, Performax International has figured out how to move the steering wheel to the opposite side of the transmission tunnel and will sell those of you living in the Land Down Unda a right-hand drive Camaro SS for just $139,000 AUD. That's $128,500 U.S. American dollars to you and me. Which is... psychotic, says us. Especially considering that in America, a Camaro SS costs $33,745. But despite what we think, half a dozen customers have already placed orders with Performax International for a Aussie-spec'd Camaro.

Rhys Millen Racing RM460 Genesis Coupe

We've been keeping tabs on Rhys Millen Racing and their construction of a V8-powered, mid-engine Hyundai Genesis Coupe for the last few weeks. Called the RM460 Genesis Coupe, this car will make its official debut at SEMA in early November, but we've got the first rendering of the exterior right here for ya.

As we've mentioned before, the engine is the 4.6-liter Tau V8 normally found under the hood of a Hyunda Genesis sedan. The Gen Coupe's rear seat has been tossed to make room, and the V8 has been upgraded with eight individual throttle bodies, a set of JE pistons and an AEM engine management system that all work in concert to bump power to 500 horsepower. In order to make the engine accessible back there, RMR also replaced the trunk lid with a carbon fiber rear hatch that's vented and hinges near the roof line.

Being a SEMA car, there's hardly a bolt or nut on this car that hasn't been modified. The stock transmission was swapped out for a Mendeola five-speed sequential gearbox and the stock suspension augmented by a set of KW coilovers. HRE 560 Series 20-inch wheels, Toyo T1R tires and a StopTech braking system round out the hardware upgrades. The exterior, meanwhile, features an RMR Signature Edition kit with carbon fiber spoilers and custom RM ONYX HD paint job by BASF. The interior sports seats plus alcantara and carbon fiber trim panels from Sparco, and there's a boomin' sound system by Infinity as well.

We're interested less in the RM460's flashy bits than what the car means. It's a rolling test bed for how far both the Genesis Coupe and the 4.6-liter Tau V8 can be pushed, and hopefully RMR will pass all that knowledge onto Hyundai for incorporation into future iterations of the Genesis Coupe.

City Cars:Daihatsu e:S Concept

Here's a small car with big ideas! This is Daihatsu's e:S concept – a city runabout that borrows some of its styling inspiration from the MINI, mixing it with a lightweight body and a 660cc three-cylinder engine.

The tiny 3.1 metre machine was a big hit with show goers thanks to its cheeky headlights and MINI-like white roof, but under the skin it's eco-friendly too, with fuel economy of 70mpg thanks to a kerbweight of just 700kg. What's more, the company has also revealed that a two-cylinder turbo version is coming too, which should return close to 100mpg.

Meanwhile, the firm scored another success with the Basket concept – a cute, curvy drop-top which boasts a removable two-piece roof and a hardwearing load area with a flip down boot.

The Boss Edition V8 Vantage takes the classic hand built English sports car and upgrades the Aston’s appearance with a wild body kit and an even more out there finish. The exterior treatment is then finished off with a set of 3 piece forged alloys measuring 20 inches in diameter and finished in glossy black with chrome accents to highlight the Boss’s reflective finish.

Although almost all of Boss’ work takes place on the outside of the V8 Vantage, they did manage to sneak a high performance Quicksilver exhaust underneath the rear end to turn the screaming V8 into a real banshee. On the inside, the high end luxury theme continues with a full Nappa leather wrapped interior. However if that just isn’t enough to satisfy your modified Aston Martin fantasies, you can let the world know that you are a bona fide lose nut, just like the $24600 number plate says you are.
