Spy Shots Mercedes R-Class

mercedes R-Class
Mercedes first venture into the MPV market wasn't a great success. The original R-Class sold 75% fewer units than the 50,000 it expected but now these spy shots show the German firm are going to try again.

This prototype R-Class mule was spotted with a disguised front end that is expected to receive a B-Class style re-design. At the rear there will be only a few minor updates including new tail lights, exhaust pipes and an updated bumper.

A range of existing engines with power outputs from 190hp to 306hp will all make a return to the R-Class along with the addition of a BlueEFFICIENCY eco engine. The most likely candidate is the 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine from the C250 CDI which produces 301bhp but emits just 138g/km of CO2.

Not even the unsuccessful sales of the first R-Class were enough to dissuade Mercedes from trying again; they seem committed to making this MPV a success and obviously see it as playing a part in the future of the brand. What part that is remains to be seen, but all will be revealed when the updated car is officially revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Alfa Romeo 166

As a direct result of Fiat’s control of the Chrysler Group, the two companies are integrating several of their processes and so now we come to hear about their concrete plans. Alfa Romeo is said to make a rear-wheel drive replacement for its defunct 166 executive saloon exclusively in North America, where most will be sold.

It is speculated that the plant will be Chrysler’s Canadian Brampton 300C site, which will also supply Europe with the car. The new big Alfa, originally codenamed project 169, will share a brand new, Chrysler-developed platform planned for the next-generation 300C and Dodge Charger saloons. The Alfa version however, will feature bespoke suspension and powertrains. Fiat and Chrysler are merging their product development, manufacturing, purchasing and distribution processes. Continued after the jump!

In addition, Alfa will soon collaborate closely with Dodge, which is the most sporting brand in the Chrysler portfolio. Fiat said that we’ll know more about its product plans for the Chrysler Group in mid-November. There’s no confirmation but already, many are excited about the Chrysler/Dodge rear-drive platform providing the basis of a new Alfa Spider and Brera. In shortened form, it may even provide the basis of the Challenger. However, it is also possible that the architecture may be too large to suit European buyers.

Bmw 3 Series Cabrio

While 3-series saloon and estate received their mid-life facelifts a while ago, here’s now the first shots of the makeover BMW plans to give to the 3-series Cabrio and Coupe.
bmw_3_series_cabrio
Tough not yet visible, the simple but effective disguise of the car’s front bumper hints to modifications underneath the plastic cover. However, we expect more changes at the front, likely to happen at grille and headlights, as well as a re-design of the rear bumper and the tail-lights. The facelifted CoupĂ© and Cabrio are supposed to make their official debuts at next year’s Geneva Motor Show.

ConceptCars:BMW Lovos

It must be fun to be a car designer. Unless, of course, your name becomes synonymous with a specific styling trend that very few seem to appreciate... but we digress. It definitely seems that 24-year-old Pforzheim University graduate Anne Forschner had a good time coming up with her BMW Lovos concept, which can alternatively look either like a frightened porcupine or svelte salmon, depending on its needs at the time.

The exterior of the Lovos - which somewhat ironically stands for Lifestyle of Voluntary Simplicity - is theoretically constructed from just one fully exchangeable part that recurs 260 times. Each exterior piece is covered in solar photovoltaic cells and can hinge on a substructure underneath to follow the sun or act as individual airbrakes. We can only assume the concept would be powered by electricity, as it makes our hairs stand up on end.

Corvette Racing-Night Practice at Petit Le Mans

Corvette Racing faces one of its biggest challenges yet with their new ZR1-based GT2 Corvette C6.Rs at Road Atlanta this weekend. Round 7 of the American Le Mans Series is Petit Le Mans, the 10-hour/1,000 mile race in the rolling hills of Northest Georgia. Reliabilty was one of the hallmarks of the GT1 Corvette C6.Rs and now the GT2 cars will have their chance to prove they can go the distance as well.

Audi R8 Clubsport

After launching the 10-cylinder version with 525hp Audi is working on a Clubsport model.
Rumours say it´ll be around 50 kilos lighter, only rear-wheel drive, manual gearing and bit more power.

The changes on the outside are just a few more spoilers and flaps on the front and side and a huge wing on the tail of the new racer. Also the diffuser down between the pipes has grown a little bit.

It could be presented on the Essen Motor Show in late November 2009 and be on sale in the first quarter of 2010.

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

I’ll start in the middle, because it’s probably the bit you want to hear most. I’m afraid you’ll have to imagine the hearing part, but I’ll do my best.

The venue, as for many an Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Fiat introduction, is the Balocco test track between Milan and Turin, built originally by Alfa to test its Grand Prix cars. The course we’re using contains corners replicated from various famous racetracks, and as no new Alfa Romeo 8C Spiders are yet registered for the road, it will have to do.

There’s a short straight before the replica (and unauthentically bumpless) Monza banking, over which runs another, wide piece of track so it forms a short tunnel. The 8C’s fabric, Z-folding, manually released but powered roof is down, of course. Out of a very tight left-hander we erupt, tail threatening to overtake nose as torque overwhelms grip. It’s one squirtable car, but catchable too without demanding the reflexes of a Vettel. Upshift with a pull on the right-hand paddle (they’re fixed, like a Maserati’s, for obvious gene-sharing reasons), upshift again.

Here’s the tunnel. A manic, explosive, dirty howl bounces off the walls, like the sound of a flat-crank Ferrari V8 with four of the exhaust-manifold branches tuned to an unfamiliar length. Throttle shut for another upshift, hear an aural firework display of crackles and bangs shooting from the four tailpipes before the howl is reinstated at a slightly lower pitch. This is effectively Maserati’s 4.7-litre V8 (Ferrari-based block, 90deg crank throws, dry sump in this spec, built at Maranello) but with extra power (450bhp) and a mad soundtrack to match. The 8C makes a GranTurismo S sound almost demure.

New Corvette C7

new_corvette_c7_photoWe bet you didn't see this one coming. The next Corvette, the C7, will have a split rear window as on the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.
In an interview with Inside Line, Ed Welburn, General Motors' head of global design, father of the re-born Camaro, told us the next Vette will follow the 2010 Camaro down the road of retro-inflected styling.

This was hinted at by the Corvette Stingray concept that was used in the second Transformers movie. "That car is not the next Corvette," says Welburn, "But the split-window is something that I expect for the next Corvette."

Welburn added, "With the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that we have these days, the visibility issue is much less of a problem."
2013_corvette_c7_wallpaper
The original 1963 split-window arrangement caused sparked one of the legendary battles among Corvette factions within the company, as head of design Bill Mitchell and Corvette godfather Zora Arkus-Duntov battled over the styling gimmick's inclusion.

The feature lasted only one year. By '64 it, along with some hideous fake hood vents, was gone. The feature made such an impression though that it has become inextricably tied with Corvette ever since.

The C7 will also remain faithful to Corvette history by remaining a front-engine/rear-drive vehicle. This after lengthy testing of mid-engine cars, discussion and, predictably, arguments about the possibility of going mid-engine with the future Vette.

2010 Seat Leon Cupra [Frankfurt 09]

frankfurt_09_seat_leon_cupra_RWhat you have here is one of the coolest little 4-door hot hatches that looks like a 2-door hatch. The 2010 SEAT Leon Cupra R gets 265 hp from its VW-battle-tested 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, making it the most powerful SEAT... ever. The front wheels can pull the car to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, and if you're not beating it up you'll get something like 29 mpg (35 mpg imperial).

Outside, along with R badges everywhere, the sizzling Cupra gets 19-inch wheels with low-profile tires, bigger brakes, and special trim for the instrument dials and alcantara-lined interior. 2010 Mustang Roush Stage 3

We had very few bad things to say about the 2010 Roush 427R Mustang after spending a week with the car, but we did have a few questions. First, why not use the new TVS2300 supercharger system that debuted on the P-51A Mustang, and second, why not add a billet grille like the previous model so that there wouldn't be six different lights up front? Roush has answered our questions in the form of the 2010 Stage 3 Mustang. The new stallion atop Roush's Mustang lineup gets a 540-horsepower upgrade complete with a second-generation R2300 supercharger, forged internals, high-flow fuel rails and injectors, upgraded fuel pump and a beefier clutch. The $59,945 price tag also gets you 18-inch wheels and tires, 14-inch brakes, a Roush suspension system, various interior enhancements and a Roush body kit complete with a billet grille.

If the you're the type of person that is only interested in performance and not the rest of the fluff, Roush is also offering a sleeper package called the 540RH. Along with the drivetrain and suspension upgrades, this budget Roush only includes the rear spoiler, a short-throw shifter, and a subtle stripe package. Roush claims they have already tested the car at the drag strip (with the optional Cooper RS3 tires) and came away with an 11.8 second time slip. At $46,145, the 540RH tucks in nicely under the Shelby GT500's price tag while offering similar performance. Hit the jump for full details on both cars.

2011 Megane CC spy shots

Based on the coupe, the Renaul Megane Coupe Convertible will have a new back-end inspired by the current lineup. With the roof receiving some camouflage, we wonder if the vehicle's top will also feature some glass. Many of the same engines, including bio-fuel, should be available on the CC.

With the Geneva Motor Show coming just before the summer convertible season begins, look for the Renault Megane CC to get a March 2010 debut.

Ferrari Enzo XX Evolution

It was less than two months ago that Edo Competition revealed the Enzo XX to an unsuspecting public. The tuner has now gone back to the same car and made improvements. How does one improve on 800hp? Can one? Apparently yes.

Meet the new edo Enzo XX Evolution, the next step in the process. Power is up and weight is down, a sure recipe for good performance numbers. By increasing the Enzo's 6.0-litre V12 cubic capacity to 6.3-litre, installing new camshafts, modified cylinder heads, titanium valve spring retainers and connecting rods, high flow catalytic converters, mufflers and air filters and new high performance exhaust headers edo did just this.

A lot more was done like improving the transmission's shift times to 60 milliseconds - 20 milliseconds less than an F1 car and using lighter drive shafts.

In the end 100kg (220 lbs) was shed and extra horses were brought into the stable. Now the car makes 618kW (840hp) and maximum torque of (575 ft-lb) is available at 5,800rpm. Moreover removing the muffler frees an extra 20 horses (15kW).

Performance figures are 0 - 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, 200km/h (124mph) in 9 seconds and 300km/h in 19 seconds. Top speed is said to go beyond the 390km/h (242mph) point thus presenting a real challenge to the 407km/h recorded by the Veyron under the skilled tutelage of one James May.

Exterior changes include a new retractable rear wing, new LED taillights and a new rear skirt with winglets.

Edo Competition will throw in a test day with an instructor and full hospitality package for those who choose to convert their prized Enzos.

2010 Camaro Hurst At Sema 2009

The rebirth of the American muscle car was about as ill-timed as it could be given the industry's global meltdown in the past 12 months, but somehow General Motors’ new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has managed to be a stellar performer--both on the track and in showrooms. Now, American performance workshop Hurst has announced that it will auction its first modified version of the Camaro prior to the 2009 SEMA Auto Show in November.

Along with today’s announcement, Hurst has also released the first few tentative details for its new Camaro Performance Series along with this preview rendering.

The first example will be finished almost completely in black, broken only by silver and red stripes. Other details include 20-inch forged aluminium T-2 wheels, a short-throw shifter, rear wing-spoiler, and unique badging.

Performance modifications will include an Eibach suspension set-up, a high-flow Magnaflow stainless-steel exhaust and a K&N intake. Being built by Hurst, you can bet there will be some much more serious mods appearing on the car once it’s ready.

The Hurst prepped Camaro will be auctioned on eBay Motors during the two weeks prior to the show. All proceeds are to benefit the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, a program that fosters industry leadership by supporting the education of students pursuing careers in the automotive aftermarket.
