Mini Countryman-Crossover in 2010 Geneva Motor Show

Mini_Countryman_Crossover
Although some sources said that the new Mini Countryman/Crossover will make its official debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Bmw confirmed the fact that the new car will not show up until 2010 at the earliest. It appears that the Frankfurt Show will only see the Mini Coupe and the Mini Roadster concepts. “The Crossover launch has been pushed back as we wish to first explore differentiation within future Mini smaller models and get feedback.” said a BMW Mini spokesman. The launch is likely to be made at the Geneva Motor Show, in 2010.

Detroit Auto Show 2011 Vw Touareg

2011_Vw_Touareg
Most of you folks know that Volkswagen is currently working on a successor for the popular Touareg SUV but nobody knows when the new car will be launched… until today! Speaking with our trusted sources from the German manufacturer, we found out that the new Touareg SUV will make its official debut in 2010 at the Detroit Auto Show.

The second generation of the Touareg also means a weight lose because the Germans are counting on massive use aluminium in order to make the new vehicle lighter. Regarding the engines, Vw is planning to bring new engines, more powerful and with a better fuel consumption! One bad news is that the 2011 Vw Touareg will lose the V8 engine in favor of a supercharged V6.Regarding the hybrid version of the SUV, this will carry a system developed by Bosch, capable to develop around 50 hp and connected to the 3.0 TSI V6 petrol engine. 2010 Lincoln MKS

"This car is a spaceship," my son informed me, in the matter-of-fact tone he always uses when presenting knowledge imparted by commercials. I expect that he's somewhat outside the target demographic -- he's nine -- but his awareness is at least an indicator that Lincoln's message is filling the airwaves. And while that message is an obvious overstatement, the tech-laden MKS is undeniably the poster child for a big push underway at Lincoln, and parent company Ford as well. You'd be forgiving for thinking that CEO and recent Seattle transplant Alan Mulally had been plucked from Microsoft rather than Boeing.

Of course, the Microsoft-cobranded Sync system is on hand. It takes a couple minutes to connect your phone the first time, but afterwards it connects automatically. There sometimes is a bit of a delay in Sync-facilitated phone conversations, but even so, the hands-free calling feature works well enough that it ends up encouraging cell-phone use while driving -- probably not a great thing. There are no real downsides to the other techno-wonders: the rearview camera, the keyless ignition, the navigation system, the active cruise control with collision warning, and the automated park assist.[via]

Ford 2011 Super Duty 6.7-liter diesel V8

Ford's issues with its long-time heavy duty diesel engine supplier Navistar will soon be coming to an end. The 2011 edition of the Ford Super Duty pickup will get an all-new diesel V8 designed in-house code-named Scorpion. So now, if Ford has any durability issues with its big diesels, it will have no one to blame but itself.

Officially the Scorpion retains the Power Stroke badge, but that and eight cylinders in a V-configuration are all that is carried over. The Scorpion engine picks up a variety of technologies that have been appearing on other recent engines, both gas- and diesel-fueled, as well as adding a few new tricks, particularly the turbocharger. The biggest change for the architecture is the move to an inside-out layout. Since the early days of the V-engine configuration, most examples have had the intake system mounted in the valley between the banks with the exhaust on the outside. Like BMW's new turbocharged gas V8 and GM's current on-the-shelf Duramax 4500, the Scorpion switches this around. Read on after the jump to learn more.

2012 BMW 3-Series Cabrio

2012_bmw_3series_photo
The current E90 BMW 3-Series has been on the market since 2005, so it's only fitting that details about the next-gen model are beginning to circulate. Most agree that the next model will feature styling lifted, at least in part, from the Concept CS, though also expect to see a healthy dose of the new corporate styling debuted on the latest 7-Series.

Due in 2012, the next BMW 3-Series will pay special attention to efficiency and it will achieve that goal through extensive use of the automaker’s EfficientDynamics technology. Low drag aerodynamics, smaller engines, and high-tech electronics will combine to make the next 3-Series a step above the current car.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2010 Lotus Exige Cup 260

Lotus shows us its hardest hard-core street car yet.

For the 2009 model year, Lotus built a super-hard-core, 257-hp Exige Cup 260, which initially was not offered in the U.S. but which was later offered here to 50 lucky buyers as the Exige S 260 Sport. Meanwhile, Lotus unveiled the look of the 2010 Exige line with the 2010 Exige S, which features a new rear spoiler and a face-lifted nose offering improved airflow to the radiator and oil-cooling system.

Debuting here ahead of the 2009 Frankfurt auto show is the new Lotus Exige Cup 260, featuring the best of both: the better aero of the 2010 Exige and the incredible mechanical bits of 2009’s Exige Cup 260. Lotus has made a few more improvements for 2010, including stiffening the rear subframe by 30 percent, swapping the battery and flywheel out for even lighter versions of same, using carbon fiber for the roof panel and scoop, and installing even lighter wheels, now weighing just 12 pounds each up front and 17 pounds apiece in back.

2010 Lotus Elise Offers New “Performance Package”

Given how stupidly awesome and amazing the Lotus Elise is right out of the box, that it is now offering a “Performance Package” could almost be interpreted as a joke, sort of like Burger King selling a “Heart Attack Edition” Double Whopper with cheese.Elise_R

But the 2010 Elise Performance Package is no joke. Rather, it’s a high-value package that combines some seven grand worth of goodies—including last year’s touring package, sport seats, Alcantara upholstery, traction control, dual oil coolers, removable hard top, 16-spoke cast alloys in silver or black with matching rear diffuser, sport dampers, sport springs, Yokohama A048 LTS performance tires, and a harness bar—for $3665. Said options remain available a la carte, but we can’t imagine passing that box on the order form without checking it, because it means that the 2010 Elise, which is starts at the same $47,250 as last year, can be thoroughly loaded for only $50,915.

Otherwise, the Elise remains unchanged for 2010, though we expect a facelift like that on the 2010 Exige S 260 to make its way to the Elise sometime soon.

Cadillac 2009 Esclade Hybrid 2WD

There are few more obvious symbols of the conspicuous consumption that characterized the late ’90s and early 21st century than the Cadillac Escalade, but almost overnight, flash and excess gave way to eco-conscious minimalism. What’s an Escalade to do?

How about strapping an electric motor to its big V8 in the name of saving resources?

We can’t blame General Motors for spreading its hybrid technology across its full-size SUV and pickup lineup. Previous experiences with GM’s big hybrids have left us generally impressed and, truth be told, we secretly enjoy the Escalade’s bling-bling lifestyle.

Now, GM offers a hybrid variant of each permutation of its GMT900-series – that’s the chassis code-name in GM-speak.

Kia 2011 Model Optima

The Kia Optima received a mid-cycle update for the 2009 model year but an all-new model is on tap for the 2011 model year. Our spy photographers recently caught up with the 2011 Kia Optima, revealing the four-door sedan is in store for a healthy dose of sport.

Designed with a sporty coupe-like feel, the all-new Optima will debut for the 2011 model year with a distinctive look – due in part by its uniquely-designed C—pillar. Although rear seat headroom does not appear to be overly compromised, the next Optima will likely be labeled as a four-door coupe.

Power-wise, the Optima will use the same engines as the 2011 Sonata and will be offered in 4 and 6-cylinder versions and – rumor has it – will follow the Sonata with a hybrid option.

Expected the 2011 Optima to debut in mid to late 2010.

2009 Volkswagen CC Sport

We still cringe upon hearing marketing types utter the phrase "four-door coupe." It's inherently a lie, a scam. Who are they trying to fool? It's not a four-door coupe, it's a sedan with a sloping roof – generally one that's missing a middle rear-seat. And there's nothing wrong with that. But, just like automakers the world 'round bend over backwards corrupting the language to avoid calling a station wagon anything but a station wagon (Sportback, Avant, Sportcombi, etc.), the oxymoronic four-door coupe appears to be here to stay. Where's George Carlin when you need him? With that rant out of the way, the 2009 Volkswagen CC is the best four-door coupe we've ever driven – at least this side of a Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, which is three times the price.[via]

2011 VolksWagen Jetta

The Jetta name will likely be carried over, and assembly will continue to take place at Volkswagen’s Puebla, Mexico, plant, but the new Jetta will measure in slightly longer and a bit wider. Volkswagen plans to sell 160,000 units annually as it hopes to convert some potential Corolla and Civic buyers with its lower base price.

Although cost-cutting measures may be obvious as compared to the current Jetta, there is speculation that an all-wheel drive option may be offered.

Production is expected to start in the 4th quarter of 2010, making this updated entry a 2011 model when it crosses the border.

2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Aging Gracefully
Though the appearance changes for all 2010 Land Rovers are pretty slight, the Range Rover Sport is perhaps the easiest to tell apart from its predecessor. The LED headlights are sure to impress valets and two-bar grille looks a bit tidier than the outgoing design. There are new front fenders, but they are hardly revolutionary in design. Out back new taillights and a redesigned bumped balance out the changes to the front. The wheel arches have been redesigned to improve aerodynamics and highlight the 19- and 20-inch wheels.

The Real Treat is Inside
Of course owners will spend a lot more time inside the range Rover Sport than admiring the outside, so it makes sense that the majority of the design upgrades are in the cabin. We're thrilled that the Range Rover Sport now looks as upscale as its price suggests, with an abundance of soft-touch plastics, softer leather, and wood trim. Additionally, the entire infotainment system is much more intuitive and half of its buttons have been eliminated. Optional adjustable side bolsters help the front seats fit drivers of all sizes and the seats are more comfortable to boot.

Porsche 911 Extreme

Porsche_911_ExtremePorsche has unveiled the new version of its hardest 911. The GT3 RS is one of our absolute favourites, an uncompromised iteration of the sublime GT3, and that looks unlikely to change now that it’s been given the revised 997.2 treatment.

It gains the new 3.8-litre straight six engine from the standard GT3 (which we drove against its rivals at the Nürburgring) but boasts extra power for the RS – total output is up to 444bhp, 15bhp higher than the 997.2 GT3 and 35bhp more than the outgoing RS.

Porsche_911_Extreme_photoIt also means the new engine boasts a 118bhp per litre specific output – not at all bad on a normally aspirated unit. Happily, it comes combined with a six-speed manual ‘box only, the gears having a shorter transmission ratio than the stock GT3’s with a higher top speed promised. That means 195mph+ is on the cards.

Weight is cut, too, with measures as thoughtful as using a lithium ion rather than conventional lead battery to shave 10kg. There’s more downforce than a regular GT3, thanks to tweaked aerodynamics – including that rather tremendous rear wing. It’s made from carbon fibre with aluminium supports and is also far more convincing aesthetically than the new decals and Rover 200 BRM-esque orange nose detailing.
